Google Chrome has arrived… and its good!

Today Brian Rakowski announced the launch of Google’s new browser, Chrome.

After teasing us yesterday with a great comic book strip explaining what it is, how it works and the ideas behind it they finally opened up downloads at around 8pm(GMT).

Fantastic Contraption

I’m not normally a big fan of Flash games, they tend to either be poorly implemented or lacking scope. This week however, I discovered the brilliant physics based Flash game Fantastic Contraption.

The premise is simple; using a series of different rods and wheels you must build a machine to move a ball into a target zone.  You are free to build your machine however you like and because of this the game is extremely open ended.

Google Ranking Explained

Historically Google have always been very secretive about the algorithms which power their search technology.  Over the past few months however, they have publishing small tidbits of information on how Google Search works in an effort to appear more transparent.

Today the man in charge of Core Ranking at Google, Amit Singhal, has publicly spoken about how search works.  In particular he talks about the three core philosopies:

  1. Best locally relevant results served globally.
  2. Keep it simple.
  3. No manual intervention.

The article doesn’t go into much detail and really only covers some of the basic details behind the ranking algorithm but nevertheless it makes for an interesting read.
